It is created when a star blows off its outer layers after it has run out of fuel.

But only a select few stars become supernovae.

Red Giant:

Our Sun and average size stars will become planetary nebulas. First becomes a red giant then sheds its outer layer & becomes a white dwarf. It will encompass the orbit of the earth within it when it expands as a red giant.
